PNR Status Enquiry: How to Proceed?

After booking a railway ticket, the most important number on your ticket is PNR. The three letters PN and R stand for ‘Passenger Name Record’ or ‘Personal Name Record’. A PNR is the single most important and unique element in your railway ticket. A PNR is a 10 digit number, which states the status of your ticket.

It tells you if you have a confirmed ticket or not? Is it an RAC ticket or a waitlisted one? What is your berth no.? PNR is of utmost importance more so when you have a waitlisted ticket or an RAC. There are various tools through which you can check the status of your ticket using the PNR number printed on your ticket.

You can check the status of your ticket by going to this Indian railway website http://www.indianrail.gov.in/pnr_Enq.html . Check PNR status page will have two boxes with instructions like: “Enter the PNR for your booking below to get the current status. You will find it on the top left corner of the ticket.” Once you fill in the PNR number in the boxes provided, and click ‘get status’, you’ll see the status of your ticket.

It is very simple to get PNR enquiry and one can get status of one’s ticket by various methods. Indian Railway website is the most common medium to check PNR status. PNR enquiry can also be done using a phone or mobile. Indian Railways has launched a new phone number for enquiry of PNR number and other information about arrival and departure time of trains, which is a completely free service and works all over India including small villages and towns. A person just needs to call ‘139′ from a BSNL, MTNL, Dolphin, Garuda, Idea, Spice Telecom and Vodaphone telecom operator enabled phones.

The resident of metro cities has this advantage of using just dial 139 followed by 10 digit ticket PNR number and 139 and followed 4 digit train number to get the train ticket PNR and train status instantly.

Following are four numbers that you can use to send text SMS in order to know the latest update of your IRCTC PNR Status:

  • Type PNR <10 digit ticket PNR No.> and send it to 54959. For example, type PNR 8442319168 and send it to 54959.
  • Type PNR <10 digit ticket PNR No.> and send it to 139.
  • Type PNR <10 digit ticket PNR No.> and send it to 5676747.
  • Type PNR <10 digit ticket PNR No.> and send it to 57886.

PNR enquiry is so convenient that even if your ticket is not confirmed and you are on the way to railway station even then you may check the status of PNR. You can do so on your mobile on the way to the railway station. Once your ticket gets confirmed the first thing you should do after reaching railway station is to find the chart for your train. The chart will have your coach no. and berth no.
